Dr. James Edward Matthews, 90, widower of Dorothy Love Matthews, died Monday, April 30, 2018 at Clemson Downs.
Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, he was a son of the late Ray D.B. and Julia Bunch Matthews. Dr. Matthews was a 1949 graduate of University of Florida where he also earned a Masters and Ed. D degree. He began his career in education in the St. Petersburg, Florida area and was the principal of Pinellas Park Junior High School from 1958-68. He was past president of the Pinellas County Council of Teachers of Mathematics and Pinellas County Secondary Principals Association. In 1971 he began his education career at Clemson University as Professor of Education and then served as the Dean of the College of Education from 1983 to 1988. While at Clemson he was very involved in many professional organizations serving on the Executive Board of the SC Association of School Administrators, President of the SC Association of Teacher Educators and received the Outstanding Educator America Award 1973. Dr. Matthews was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and was a longtime member of Clemson United Methodist Church. He was a US Army veteran of WWII where he served in the Philippines.
Surviving are sons, James E. Matthews, Jr. (Susan) of Seneca, David Matthews (Jennifer) of Charleston and Steve Matthews (Charles Fallis) of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Dr. Susan Carey Nystrom (Dr. Steve), Paige Wolfe (Rev. Andrew), Megan Hightower (Travis) and Spenser Matthews; great grandson, James Nystrom.
In addition to his wife and parents, Dr. Matthews was predeceased by a brother, Ray Matthews; sisters, Nell Matthews, Frances Breeding and Carol Came; and a great granddaughter, Caroline Nystrom.
Memorial services will be 2 PM, Friday at Clemson United Methodist Church.
The family will greet friends following the service at the church.
