James McCovery

James McCovery had an extraordinary life. His sunrise was January 13, 1939 in Mobile Alabama and his sunset was May 15, 2025, in Easley, South Carolina at the blessed age of 86. James is survived by his loving and doting wife of over 50 years, Gail McCovery, who was his whole world.

His children, Jessica McCovery, Kenneth McCovery, Rhoda McCovery, Phyllis McCovery, Sean McCovery, Knicole McCovery, Keenya McCovery, Ni McCovery, and Christian McCovery-Ruiz were the light of his existence. James amassed a quiver full of grandchildren (26) and great-grandchildren (37), which are his legacy.

James is also survived by three siblings: Leslie McCovery, Norman Franklin, Sr., and Brenda Franklin and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and brothers and sisters in Christ.

James spent the bulk of his life in Southern California as a devoted husband, loving father and a carpenter. He was a loyal member of First Love, Church of God In Christ for over 30 years and served as a deacon, an usher and mighty man of God. He was a pillar of the community and a staple in the lives of all those that he cherished.

James was known for his kindness and sincerity and maintained a passion for cowboy films, National Geographic's, history and comedy. Those who knew James will remember him for his infectious smile, overwhelming laughter, deep-rooted faith in Jesus, and his unwavering commitment to spreading love and kindness to everyone he encountered. He had a rare gift for making others accountable, leaving a lasting impact on all who crossed his path. James inspired a life of structure and servitude and will be missed deeply by all who knew him.

The family will host a private service.
