Mr. James McClellen Powell, 63, of 201 North Catherine Street, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2013 at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Easley, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Rev. Tirel and Myrtle Atkins Powell. He was a member of Blue Ridge View Baptist Church.
James is survived by three sisters, Brenda Hayes (Arthur) and Kathy Masters (Randall), all of Pickens, and Janie Mitchell (Gary) of Honea Path; one brother, Sherren Powell of Easley. He is also survived by beloved nieces and nephews, Heath Hudson, Jessica Masters, Tyson Powell, Jade Clark and Bailey Medlin; great-nieces, Zoe Hester, Hannah Hudson, Madelyn and Eden Powell; and great-nephews, Blake Hudson, Jaxson Powell and Zack Clark.
James attended Pickens High School where he was an award winning FFA member. He was an avid fisherman and hunter belonging to the Cove Creek Beagle Club for the past seven years. James also enjoyed watching and attending the Braves Baseball games and was a devoted South Carolina Gamecock.
The family will receive friends Thursday, February 7, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. at Blue Ridge View Baptist Church, with Rev. Dr. Stuart Houston and Rev. James "Buckshot" Avant officiating.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Hospice Care of South Carolina, especially Kim Thrasher, Sabrina Alexander, Angie Cole and Chad Bowen who took such good care of James in his last days. And a special thank you to all his friends who regularly came by to cheer him up, especially Jerry O'Shields and Richard Galloway.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that memorials be made to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 110 Dillon Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29307 or to the Building Fund of Blue Ridge View Baptist Church, 745 Wolf Creek Road, Pickens, SC 29671.
The family is at the home of Brenda and Arthur Hayes, 122 John Childs Road, Pickens, SC 29671.
