James Edward Servis Clemson
James Edward Servis, 75, resident of the Clemson Downs Healthcare, died Saturday, March 22, 2008.
Jim leaves his loving wife of 51 years, Joan Gail Servis of Clemson, South Carolina, and his mother Mina Marie Servis, of the Clemson Downs. Additional surviving family members include a son Mark Edward Servis and his wife Nancy, of Davis, California; a daughter Marie Elizabeth Fowler and her husband Dale of Greenville, South Carolina; a sister Suzanne Smith of Big Rapids, Michigan; and five grandsons, Daniel Fowler, Ryan Servis, Luke Fowler, Kyle Servis, and Nathan Fowler. He was preceded in death by his father, Rolland Servis and an infant daughter, Joy Marie.
Jim was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and a graduate of Ann Arbor High School where he was a state champion wrestler. After working for the Ohio state government for many years, Jim returned to school and received a Master's degree in Education from John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio in 1975. He taught in elementary schools in the Cleveland area and later was a professor at the college level at John Carroll University until his retirement in 1999.
An Eagle Scout, Jim enjoyed adventure camping, canoeing, sea kayaking, and backpacking his entire life. He was a talented musician and played drums in his own dance band for many years in several church and community orchestras. Jim was a member of Clemson Presbyterian Church where he was a percussionist in the church orchestra.
Jim's family wishes to thank the many friends, including the staff of Clemson Downs Health Center, who provided physical and moral support during Jim's battle with Alzheimer's disease.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 1:30 PM at Clemson Presbyterian Church in Clemson, SC.
