JANE MARTIN SCHMALZ,

Jane Frances Martin Schmalz, 88, lately of Clemson and formerly of 223 White Cedar Way, Aiken, SC, died Sunday, October 5, 2008 in Anderson. A native of Orangeburg, she was the daughter of the late William Belton and Mary Mignonne Lowman Martin.
She was a graduate of Orangeburg High School and attended Immaculata College on a basketball scholarship. After graduation she returned to South Carolina where she taught school in Bowman and was active in the community. She met her husband, Richard Albert Schmalz of Needham, Massachusetts, while he was in training for the Army Air Corps in South Carolina in 1942. They were married in Orangeburg on March 31, 1944, and the couple moved to Massachusetts where they raised their three children. She taught school in Massachusetts for many years and, after the couple moved to Connecticut, she continued to volunteer as a teacher. She also took up golf for the first time and ultimately won her club championship at Pattonbrook Country Club several times. The couple moved to Spring, Texas in 1990, and then to Aiken in 2005. She was a member of the Moultrie Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution located in Orangeburg.
She is survived by sons: Richard Albert Schmalz, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Damascus, MD and Karl Belton Schmalz and his wife, Bonnie Martin of Dallas, TX; daughter: Mary Louise Bennett and husband Johnny of Aiken, SC; brothers: William Belton Martin of Central and John Campbell Martin and wife Willie Anne of Clemson; brother in law: Dr. Edward Sullivan of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren: Christopher Stanley Benson and wife Meredith, Jayne Caroline Piana and husband Brian, Geoffrey Schmalz, Kristina Schmalz and husband Dilum Ranatunga, Matthew Schmalz and Timothy Schmalz, and great-grandchildren: Blake, Taryn and Jaydon Schmalz, Emily Lauren Piana and Navam and Pasan Ranatunga. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Albert Schmalz and her sister, Mignonne Martin Sullivan.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 4:15 pm in the chapel of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Clemson. Interment will be Friday at 1pm in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Orangeburg, SC.
