Jemelene Chastain Moore, Ed.D., widow of Jerry David Moore, Ph.D., passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 22, 2016, at her home in Greenville, SC. Jemelene was born on September 10, 1932 in the middle of a cotton field in McClain County, Oklahoma to Hubert and Maggie Chastain. During the early years of her life, her father did share crop farming to support the family. The family lived on the farm in Newcastle, OK until she was in the third grade when they moved to Norman, OK and then to Los Angeles, CA. In California, she attended various schools, graduating from Compton High School in 1950 and the University of California, San Francisco School of Nursing in 1955. Jemelene’s first job was as a visiting nurse in New York City, before returning to Oklahoma where she met her husband, Jerry.
In 1966, Jemelene enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh where she received her Master’s Degree in Nursing Education. She and her family moved to Auburn, AL where she taught Nursing at Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, AL and Columbus College in Columbus, GA. She matriculated to Auburn University to study Counseling Education and received her Doctorate in 1977. Jemelene was the first faculty member hired by Auburn University for its newly established School of Nursing in 1979. She taught at Auburn until 1981, following the death of her husband.
From Auburn, Jemelene moved to Tulsa to be near her family and to teach at the University of Tulsa from 1981 through 1989. She retired from Nursing in 1989 and dedicated herself to volunteering and spending time with her family. In 1993, while living in Little Rock, AR she received the Literacy Action Volunteer of the Year Award. In 1995, Jemelene moved to Charlotte, NC to become a fulltime grandmother. In 1997, she developed muscular dystrophy which affected her legs and mobility. Jemelene adapted and dealt with the affliction with grace and fortitude throughout the rest of her life.
Jemelene made her final move to Greenville, SC in 2001. She lived independently and enjoyed working in the yard, visiting the library where she read the world’s classics, completing crossword puzzles and doting on her grandson.
She was a strong Christian and a devoted member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church where she was an active member of the Ruth Diggs Women’s Circle until she became unable to attend.
Jemelene was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry David Moore, and her parents, James Hubert and Maggie (Miller) Chastain. She leaves behind a son, Hugh Charles (Ann Smith) Moore of Greenville, SC; a daughter, Ruth Elon (Marty Olen) Jackson of Newcastle, OK; a grandson, David Asbury Moore of Philadelphia, PA; a sister, Fleeta Carole (Dale) White of Norman, OK; numerous nieces, cousins and friends across the nation.
On Tuesday, October 25th, the family will hold a private graveside service at Greenville Memorial Gardens. That evening, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, the family will host a Celebration of Life for friends and family at the home of her son, Hugh Moore, at 108 Babbs Hollow, Greenville, SC.
