Jerry Alan Waldvogel, 55, husband of Sherry Savage Waldvogel and father of Sarah Marie Waldvogel, died Saturday, May 30, 2009 at his residence. His mother Alice, three brothers Jeff, Jim and Jack, and their families also survive him.

Jerry, born in Honolulu, HI received a B.S. from Stanford University and earned a Ph.D. in behavioral biology from Cornell University. He came to Clemson University in 1989 where he earned a title of full professor. Jerry was committed to excellence in education a man who always searched for the truth and accepted it in whatever form he found it. He gained national recognition for numerous academic achievements including the Society for College Science Teaching's Outstanding Undergraduate Science Teacher Award. In addition he received the Trustees Award for Faculty Excellence, the Student Government's Excellence in Teaching Award, and The Class of 1939 Award for Excellence.

Jerry's professional contribution were matched by his civic involvement. He served on the SC Life Project Grant, president of the Clemson Montessori PTO for many years, Chairman of the Board for BSCS and was an active committee member on the DNR Jocassee Gorges Outreach & Education Committee.

As a teacher, Jerry lived for the opportunity to kindle an intellectual spark in his students. He was also a first-class scientist, a tireless advocate of public science education, an active member of the University and broader communities, as well as a genuinely great guy.

Above all he was a loving husband, a proud and nurturing father to Sarah, son, brother, uncle, and friend.

Memorial services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Carillon Garden at Clemson University. A reception at Tillman Hall will immediately follow the service.

In lieu of flowers donation may be made to either: The Sarah Waldvogel Education Fund (donations can be made at any BB&T branch office or mailed to BB&T, 1070 Tiger Blvd., Clemson, SC 29631) or to Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) at www.bscs.org.
