Jimmie George Goodnight, Sr, 91, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2026, at the Barclay at Patrick Square surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Salisbury, North Carolina, on June 23,1934, he was the son of the late James Ferdinand Goodnight and Lucy Brandon Goodnight. Jimmie graduated from China Grove High School in 1952. He married the love of his life, Julia McCoy and they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in August 2025. He was employed with Owens-Illinois in Spencer.
He was an active member in the Shriners, Masonic Temple and the Order of the Eastern Star, serving in various positions at the local and state level. He was a devoted member of Bethel United Methodist Church and Trading Ford Baptist Church all his life. He was deeply loved by his family and shared his love of the outdoors, exhibited great pleasure in cleaning all his cars and farm equipment, and loved working the Farmer’s Market on Saturdays in town.
He is survived by his daughter, Gwendolyn G. Hummel (Jeff) of Central, South Carolina, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many wonderful friends and family members.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Julia M Goodnight; his son, Jimmie “Jimbo” Goodnight, Jr.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 9 at Bethel United Methodist Church, 2380 Long Ferry Road, Salisbury, NC.
Interment will be at Trading Ford Baptist, 3600 Long Ferry Road, Salisbury, NC. The family will receive friends at 12:30 pm Saturday prior to the service.
