James Gaines (Jimmy - Herb) Evatt, Sr., 78, of 231 Mill Avenue, died Sunday, August 28, 2011 at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Pickens County, he was a son of the late John G. and Beulah Lesley Evatt. Jimmy was retired manager of Shipping and Receiving with Cannon Mill and later Central Textiles. He was a proud 1952 graduate of Central High School and was a star player on the both the 1949 and 1951 state championship football teams. He earned an associate degree in Industrial Management from Tri County Tech. He was also the owner of Pine Thicket Christmas Tree Farm and a US Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Central. Jimmy's hobbies included gardening, carpentry, the Atlanta Braves and following Daniel and Clemson Sports.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Alice Tate Evatt of the home; sons, Jimmy Evatt, Jr. and wife, Rebecca of Six Mile and Michael Evatt and wife, Michalann of Norris; daughters, Cindy Elder of Huntersville, NC, Cathy Putnam of Central and Connie Sexton of Six Mile; brother, Marvin E. Evatt of Central; grandchildren, Jacob and Grayson Elder, Hannah Sexton, Jay and Kristen Putnam Madelyn and Tate Evatt; and family friend, Willie Dean Black.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, John Evatt and Doc Evatt; and a sister, Betty Pilgrim.

Funeral services will be 3 PM, Wednesday in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home with Rev. Tony Qualkinbush officiating.

Burial will follow in Sharon United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:45 PM, Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home.
