Jimmy Don Sheriff, 70, died Thursday, June 30, 2011.
A native of Central, he spent his early life at the family home at 112 Donellie Lane in Central, on a street named for his parents. Later, he had a tree farm on Old Shirley Road next to Five Mile Creek.
He attended the Central Elementary Schools and graduated from D.W. Daniel High School in 1959. While in high school he enlisted in the South Carolina Army National Guard when he remained for thirty-five years.
He attended Newberry College for two years on a football scholarship before transferring to Southern Wesleyan University where he graduated with an A.B. Degree. After graduation, he was employed as an accountant by Saco Lowell Corporation of Easley until entering the University of Georgia where he earned both the Master of Business Accounting (1970) and Ph.D. degrees (1976). He also attended Clemson and Furman Universities.
After an initial position as assistant professor at Presbyterian College, he affiliated with Clemson University where he held the positions of associate professor, professor, and, senior associate dean of Clemson University�??s College of Business and Behavioral Science.
He served as President of the Clemson University Club. He is the author of several articles and publications. On the International level, he served as the United States Representative to the Network of International Business Schools headquartered in Rennes, Frances. Other business ventures were undertaken in Italy, Germany, Egypt, Japan, Iwo Jima and Russia (including Siberia).
He was a Rotarian, former President of the Central Lions Club, and founding President of the Pickens County Property Owners Association and former President of the Piedmont Chapter of the Military Officers Association.
In his thirty-five military career, he enlisted as a private and later graduated from Army Officers Candidate School. During his career he held numerous positions including Commanding Officer of Battery C, 2nd Battalion 263rd Air Defense Artillery and the position of Logistics Officer of the 228th Signal Brigade and was Chief of Plans and Operations for the South Carolina National Guard. His last assignment was as Commandant of South Carolina Military Academy (later 218th Leadership Brigade), retiring as a Brigadier General. He was a graduate of the United States Army Command and Staff College and attended both the Army and National War Colleges. His decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit. He was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, the State of South Carolina�??s highest award.
Surviving is his wife Gwen Anne Campbell Sheriff of the home.
He was predeceased by his parents, James Donald and Gladys Ellie Chapman Sheriff.
Funeral services will be 3 PM, Sunday in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 2:45 PM, Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.
