Joe Bill Vickery

Mr. Joseph William (Joe Bill) Vickery, 86, of 200 Dogwood Lane, died Monday, March 19, 2007, at St. Francis Hospital.
Born in Central, Mr. Vickery was a son of the late John David and Sadie Stewart Vickery. He graduated from Clemson University, Class of 1941, with a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture. Following graduation, he taught agriculture at Beth Ware High School in Kings Mountain before entering the U.S. Army. Mr. Vickery was a decorated World War II Veteran having received the Silver Star, the Bronze Cluster and Purple Hearts. He served in the Aleutian Islands, England, France and Germany and was discharged in 1946.
Mr. Vickery was a mail carrier for twenty-seven years. At the same time, he ran his own income tax and bookkeeping service. He also had a real estate business.
Prior to being a member of Rockvale Baptist Church in Greenville, Mr. Vickery had served as a former deacon, Chairman of the Deacons, Youth Sunday School Teacher and in other capacities of First Baptist Church in Central. Mr. Vickery was recently recognized with a plaque for being a fifty-year member of American Legion Post 151 in Central.
Surviving are his wife of twenty-one years, Audrey Vaughn Vickery, of the home; two brothers, Victor Van Vickery of Forest City, N.C. and John D. Vickery, Jr. of Easley; three step-sons, Mark Holt of Ladson, S.C., Robert Holt of Fort Myers, Florida and Marty Mathis of Piedmont; one step-daughter, Maria Cox, of Pickens; six step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. Mr. Vickery was predeceased by three brothers, Eugene, Larian and Stewart Vickery; and one sister, Edalene Vickery Earle.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Powdersville Road. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Reflection Mausoleum at Robinson Memorial Gardens, 1425 Powdersville Road, Easley.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
