John H. Elwell
1952-2026
Pickens, SC
John H. Elwell, 74, of Pickens, SC, husband of Joan Dickard Elwell, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026, at Agape’s Upstate Community Hospice House in Landrum, SC, after several months of illness. He passed at 9:59 pm while holding his son’s hand and listening to the Gaither version of “Amazing Grace.”
Mr. Elwell was born on Friday, April 11, 1952, in Pickens County and was the third child of the late Johnnie Eugene Elwell and Genieve Seawright Elwell.
He attended Pickens High School and afterwards worked in the shipping department of Sir Shirtmakers, which produced apparel sold by Lands’ End and other major retailers. In addition to his professional life, he was also a member of Griffin Baptist Church and enjoyed listening to gospel music, particularly that of Bill and Gloria Gaither.
John was a fan of NWA/WCW professional wrestling and would often attend matches at the former Greenville Memorial Auditorium. He was also a passionate fan of college and professional football and frequently attended games at Memorial Stadium to support his favorite team, the Clemson Tigers. Beyond his sports interests, John was an avid baseball card collector and could often be found browsing the Pickens Jockey Lot on Wednesday mornings, where he enjoyed browsing for treasures. There, he found his favorite Tabby cat named Rex and often fed the stray cat population around his house. The mountains of Maggie Valley, NC, and Pigeon Forge, TN, were favorite vacation spots of the Elwell family.
The Elwell family would like to express a special thank you to Agape’s Upstate Community House for their incredible kindness, care, and support during John’s final days.
Surviving Mr. Elwell are his loving wife of 47 years, Joan Elwell; his son, Jason Elwell of Greer, SC; and one sister, Bobbie Bright (Gary), also of Greer. Along with his parents, John was predeceased by his brother, Luther Elwell, and a dearly beloved aunt, Annie Powell.
