John G. Evans, Sr.


John G. Evans, Sr., 85, died Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the Rainey Hospice House. He is survived by his wife of 65 years and his childhood sweetheart, Mary Lou Nicely Evans. Born in Pendleton, August 18, 1928, Mr. Evans was the son of the late Eugene Evans and Grace Whitlock Evans.

Mr. Evans attended Pendleton High School, where he was involved in many sports. He attended Clemson University. He enlisted in the US Army in 1946 and was stationed at Fort Fitz Simmons Hospital in Denver, Colorado. There he served as a medic to recovering WW II veterans. He married in 1948 and then moved to Charleston to attend the Medical University ? College of Pharmacy. After graduation, Mr. Evans worked as a pharmacist at Standard Drug Store in Anderson, Alexander's Pharmacy in Seneca and in 1956 he joined the family pharmacy, Evans Drug Store, located on the square in historic Pendleton. In 1996, Mr. Evans retired, ending more than 100 years of a small-town business under four generations of Evans pharmacists.

Mr. Evans was a life time member of the First Baptist Church of Pendleton where he was a deacon and treasurer. He served on the State Pharmacy Board and on other state pharmacy positions. He was a member of the Pendleton Masonic Lodge, Pendleton Exchange Club, and the Merchant's Guild. A long-time golfer, he was a member of Boscobel Golf course. He will be remembered as an excellent golfer, winner of many tournaments and as mentor for many younger golfers.

Including his wife, Mary Lou, he is survived by son, John G. Evans, Jr. and his wife, Teresa Paschal Evans of Pendleton and a granddaughter, Anna Elizabeth Evans, Greenwood, SC. Harry Evans, his last surviving brother, and his wife Pat M. Evans of Pendleton. Dot Snider and Joanne Hodge of Charlotte, SC are his surviving first cousins. He is survived by many nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers; Dr. William Evans, Anderson, SC and Dr. Eugene Evans, Jr., Tuscaloosa, Al.

Funeral services will be Monday, September 16, 2013 at 3:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Pendleton with Dr. Courtney Krueger and Rev. Harry Girtman officiating. Burial will be immediately following in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:15 to 2:45 in the church sanctuary.
