John Darrell Gibbs, 68, affectionately known as Darrell, loving husband of Wendy Eschinger Gibbs, passed away suddenly on Friday, October 31, 2025, at his home. Born in Greenville, SC, to the late Oscar Gibbs and the late Juanita Evans Gibbs. He was a member of Gilead Baptist Church in Pickens, SC. He was saved by grace and at peace, knowing he would be in God's presence in Heaven when he left this earth. Darrell was a man who lived life with unwavering conviction, embodying gentle strength and an enduring spirit that touched the hearts of everyone he encountered.
Darrell achieved a Doctorate of Theology, a testament to his belief in lifelong learning and his dedication to service. His faith was further enriched during his seven years as a Baptist missionary in Scotland, where he spread goodwill and compassion while forging connections that would last a lifetime. John’s career was marked by his entrepreneurial spirit and his deep commitment to community. As the founder of Good News Baptist Church in Greer, he provided a sanctuary for many seeking solace and hope. His professional journey as an accomplished auctioneer and realtor allowed him to thrive in the real estate industry, where he not only succeeded as a business owner but also emerged as a leader, mentor, and true friend to countless individuals. His professional passion and heartfelt guidance have left a lasting impact on those who knew him. He was a man who knew many professions throughout his lifetime and excelled at all of them. He also spent many years as an over-the-road trucker. No matter what he was doing, the most important thing to him was providing for his family, always putting their needs before his own. He was a family man before he was anything else.
Darrell's interests were wide-ranging, and he took a particular interest in speaking at various events, including the Fidelity National Convention, where his signature look of a starched dress shirt tucked into overalls became a beloved aspect of his persona. He lived by the motto, "Your attitude contributes to your outlook; your outlook determines your outcome," a reflection of the positivity he brought to every situation. Darrell's presence was commanding but humble; he would say he was just a little old country boy, but he had a way of capturing a room's attention with his wisdom and warmth. He was always there for his family, ensuring that they felt supported and valued. His legacy is one of love, mentorship, and profound impact, both personally and professionally.
Darrell's personality was a testimony to providing, dedication, and determination. He was a remarkable husband who embraced life and family wholeheartedly. Wendy always felt very blessed to have joined an already-made caring family. Memories are cherished of his children waiting eagerly for him after dinner, even though they had already eaten, wanting to spend time with him and enjoy bites from his plate. He could often be found playfully chasing them up the stairs to tuck them into bed. His children regarded him as their hero, a title he wore with pride as he continually encouraged them to be their best selves. He was always there when his family needed him. One of their favorite saying that he told his children was that “I won’t fish for you, but I’ll find you a stocked pond and the best fishing pole.”
In addition to his adoring wife of 24 years, he is survived by son, John "Johnny Boy" Gibbs; daughters, Aundrea "Aundie Pondie" Gibbs, Julie "Middle Button" Lawrence (Solo) and Ashley "Pashley" Gibbs (Worm); grandchildren, Malia Dixon, Kayla Gibbs, Dayvonn Young, Hailey Campbell, Jayden "Jaybug" Bachmeyer (Isiah), Kenzie Hamlin and Kiley Hamlin; sisters, Joan Faigle (Dan) and Libby Santos (Santiago); brothers, Harold Gibbs (Renee) and Joe Gibbs (Denise) and man's best friend, "Shellie", his furry companion.
