John Patrick "Pat" Crowther

July 22, 1943 — September 27, 2024

Clemson

Pat was born and raised in Anderson, SC the son of Patrick Henry Crowther and Betty Marshall Crowther. He is survived by his immediate family members, including his loving wife Teddee of 54 years, two sons Dr. Marshall J. Crowther, of Oxford, Mississippi, and Lee P. Crowther (Heather), of Greenville, SC. He also is survived by a brother Carroll (Nancy) of Beaufort, SC.

He was a 1961 graduate of Anderson Boys’ High School and a 1965 graduate of Clemson University with a degree in Civil Engineering. His professional work career included time at Lockheed Aircraft where he was associated with structural design work on the C5A transport airplane. Later work included employment in the Anderson City Engineers Office, SCDOT, including Maintenance Engineer for Pickens County. The bulk of his professional career was in the Facilities Division of Clemson University, where he managed a multitude of construction projects, including the South Upper Deck Expansion of Memorial Stadium, both Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Facilities, academic facilities, and student housing complexes. He considered his involvement with the construction of the Scroll of Honor adjacent to Memorial Stadium, including his interaction with members of the Clemson Corps, as one of his most rewarding and memorable projects.

He was a registered professional engineer and a nationally certified USA Track and Field Official. For many years along with his good friend and colleague, Mike (Snake) Casey, he was responsible for the official timing of both indoor and outdoor track races at Clemson University.

Also, a source of great pride by his family, and unknown by many, was the countless volunteer hours that he and his friend Dr. Herb Cooper spent planning and advocating for many building and facility improvements for the Pickens County School District, and included provisions for additional and much needed science classrooms at D.W. Daniel High School, and eventually the construction of the new Clemson Elementary school. Pat and Herb spent many a late night, sometimes past midnight, over two decades on the dining room table hashing out architectural renderings and strategies to bring these aspirations to a reality. The two of them were instrumental in getting a new track and field facility built at Edwards Middle School and completed in 1994, which allowed D. W. Daniel High to be able to finally host a home track meet.

For many years he participated in local road races along with his two sons.

He also spent many years as an adult volunteer for Boy Scout Troop 235, serving as the adult quartermaster.

Some of his memorable times included summer work during his college years at Kings Inn in Highlands, NC, where he developed a love of the mountains, which lasted the rest of his life.

He also took pride in following in his grandmother’s (Grace Colglazier Marshall) footsteps who had been a national leader of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) National Organization by being an active member of the local Sons of the American Revolution organization.

Pat was also a member of one of the original local social fraternities at Clemson, Delta Kappa Alpha (a Deac), and Tiger Brotherhood (a membership of which he was particularly proud and which his grandfather, John Logan Marshall, is considered one of the founders of Tiger Brotherhood). Members of both organizations are asked to serve as honorary pall bearers.

He was an active member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Clemson, although his in-person attendance was significantly lessened with COVID-19 and his subsequent Leukemia diagnosis.

His family wishes to offer many thanks to the compassionate care provided to him including his oncologist (Dr. Sharif Khan), as well as all the other doctors, nurses, caregivers, and staff at St. Francis Bon Secours Hospital and Cancer Clinic in Greenville, SC.

The family wishes in lieu of flowers for those persons wishing to make memorials in Pat’s memory, to consider St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, Memphis, TN, The American Leukemia Society, or St. Andrew Catholic Church-Clemson Building Fund.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Andrew Catholic Church on October 6th, 2025 at 2:00 PM followed by a reception.
