Comr. John Frank Rabai

Commander John Frank Rabai, 91, of Salem died Thursday, March 8, 2013 at the Cottingham Hospice House in Seneca, SC.
John was born, April 3, 1921 in Baltimore, MD, the son of John B. and Mary Vicarini Rabai. He attended Baltimore City College and the University of Maryland where he was a member of Sigma Chi and played lacrosse. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Navy aboard a mine sweeper on New Hebredis, Islands. Following 4 years of active duty Commander Rabai served 20 years in the US Naval Reserves. Following WWII, he returned to Baltimore and married Elizabeth Christman and managed Rabai's Bakery. He is survived by three children Gina Rabai Clair (Edward) of Chevy Chase, MD, John Charles Rabai of Ponchatola, LA and Stephen Phillip Rabai of Columbia, MD; and five grandchildren, Kristen Rabai, Collette Castleberry, Michelle Clair, Jarrett Rabai and Patrick Clair.
After Elizabeth's death, John married Gail Hollingsworth (Duggan) Rabai in 1980 and in addition to his wife, is survived by his stepchildren, Charles A. Duggan, III of Macon, GA, Holly Duggan Broyles of Atlanta, GA, Kathleen Duggan McKinney of Macon, GA and Robert Keller Duggan of Baton Rouge, LA; and six stepgrandchildren, Michael Duggan (Marsha), Taylor Duggan, Katie Broyles, Thoms Broyles, Justin McKinney and Meghan McKinney.
Commander Rabai loved the Navy, supported the Navy Memorial, enjoyed his family, traveling , working with wood, sailing, bridge, cribbage and golf. He was always been a Presbyterian having been a member at Hunting Ridge Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, MD, First Presbyterian Church in New Bern, NC and most recently Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in Clemson, SC.
Memorial services will be 2 PM Sunday at Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in Clemson, SC with Rev. Laura Conrad officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in Tartan Hall at the church.
