Born in Ridgewood, New Jersey on September 25, 1919, Col. Jacques is a graduate of Ridgewood High School Class of 1938 where he played baseball in the springtime and, in the winter, skated to school on the frozen surface of the Ho Ho Kus Brook.
He enlisted in the Army at the outbreak of World War II, rose through the ranks and, as a young lieutenant, landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day plus one. He fought through Europe with the famous Indianhead Division and was decorated for valor during the Battle of the Bulge. Among his commendations, citations and campaign mission awards are the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal.
Col. Jacques continued his military career as a US Army Intelligence Officer through both active and reserve duty, retired in 1970 and continued to reside in Ridgewood until 1989. He and his wife Margaret Grant Jacques (deceased) lived in New Bern, NC prior to moving to Pendleton in 1998 where he enjoyed morning coffees at Granny??s Grille, lunches at the Village Bakery, and dinners at the Exchange Street Pub. His favorite pastimes were watching sports of all sorts and attending Clemson baseball games.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law John D. and Annemarie Jacques of Pendleton, his son and daughter-in-law Gary D. and Dale Jacques of Greensboro, NC, and his beloved granddaughter Arianne Jacques. To his great delight, many of Col. Jacques??s nieces and nephews have remained in close touch from a variety of places around the world.
A local memorial service will be planned for the near future after which Col. Jacques will be interred alongside his wife at Arlington National Cemetery.
