John (Jack) B. Smith, Jr.

John (Jack) Baylus Smith, Jr., 78, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at AnMed Health in Anderson after a long illness.
Jack was born in Ashepoo, SC on November 29, 1937 to the late John Baylus Smith, Sr. and Frankie Belle Rucker Smith. He was raised in Athens, GA where his love of football was nurtured at the YMCA under the leadership of Corbin Kelly and later as a member of the Athens High School football team. It was there that he obtained the nickname of "Buffalo." Jack then went on to receive a football scholarship to play at Clemson College where he graduate in January of 1961 with a BS Degree in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation he accepted a job with Southern Bell where he worked for thirty-five years before retiring. Jack loved first of all, his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He enjoyed all sports, but particularly Clemson Football, trips to the beach and most of all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jack is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Judy Cooper Smith, a daughter Jackie Smith Allen (David) sons, David Smith (Joni) and Brad Smith (Bonnie), seven grandchildren, Scott Allen (Megan), Kelly Allen Thurmond (Jon), Josh Smith (Kelsie), Zack Smith, Luke Smith, Bailey Wilson, John Cooper Smith, and three great grandchildren, Hailey Allen, Maggie Allen and Ansley Thurmond.
A worship service and Celebration of Life will be held at 2 PM, Friday at First Baptist Church, Pendleton, SC where he was an active member when health permitted.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church.
