JORDAN A. DEAN

Jordan Arthur Dean, Sr., 97, died Monday, August 31, 2009, at the Hospice House in Seneca. He was the widower of Virginia Dusenberry Dean.
Born October 22, 1911, in Mt. Carmel, SC, he was the youngest of the 7 children of Jacob and Sallie Mae Dean. He graduated from Wofford College in 1933 where he was the college's Rhodes Scholar nominee his senior year. He earned his Master's Degree from Vanderbilt University in 1934.
He served as Assistant Headmaster and teacher of French, German, and English in the Junior College Division of Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tennessee, from 1934 to 1937. In 1937, he accepted an offer to become the second foreign language faculty member at then Clemson College, where he taught French and English.
In 1941, he was called to active duty as a Second Lieutenant in the Army. He was stationed at Holabird Motor Base in Baltimore, and from there he was transferred to the Pentagon in Washington, DC. He was discharged from active duty in 1946 with the rank of Major and maintained his commission in the reserves at Clemson and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
After the war, he returned to Clemson and taught mostly French, but some Spanish and German as well. From 1969 to 1972, he was appointed Interim Head of the Department of Foreign Languages. He retired from Clemson University in 1977. In 2007, a scholarship was established in his honor by Dr. and Mrs. James Monroe to assist language students with study-abroad expenses.
He was a long-time member of Clemson United Methodist Church, serving for 50 years as the Sunday School treasurer.
He was an avid gardener and for many years had a serious interest in the hybridizing of daylilies. One of his hybridized daylilies, called "Clemson" is registered with the American Hemerocallis Society. He was a lover of music and enjoyed collecting and listening to classical music recordings.
Since his wife's death in 2000, his love of language led him to write poetry and prose. Three of his poems were recently selected to be displayed at the Abernathy Waterfront Park in Clemson.
Surviving are three sons, Jordan A. Dean, Jr. and wife Cheryl of Clemson, William (Bill) D. Dean of Central, and James (Jimmy) F. Dean and wife Betty of Clemson; a daughter Melissa V. Dean of Central; 5 grandchildren: Allison D. Eaton; Jessica Dean; Jordan Dean III; Jacob Dean; Katherine Dean; and 2 great grandchildren: Carson Eaton and Wylie Dean.
He was preceded in death by brothers: Virgil A. Dean, Francis A. Dean, James M. Dean, and sisters: Myrtle Dean, Sophronia D. Teasley, and Helen D. Cooley.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 3, at 11 AM at Woodland Cemetery on the campus of Clemson University.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 3, at 4 PM at Clemson United Methodist Church. Following the service, the family will receive friends at a reception at the church.
