Mr. Joseph "Joe" W. Board, 77, of Pickens, loving husband of Martha Shuler Board, passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Pickens.

Joe was born in Christiansburg, Virginia on October 22, 1939 to the late Harry Raymond Board (Betty) and Mary Alma Weaver Board. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1962, and his J.D. Degree in 1965, both from the University of Virginia. Joe was a U.S. Army Signal Corps Veteran, serving in Vietnam, and was a victim of Agent Orange. He served as a Past Commander and Chaplain of Pickens Post 11, and was currently taking classes at the VA Clinic in Greenville. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pickens where he was a Sunday School Teacher and held several offices throughout the years.

Joe retired from the Family Court in Pickens as a Judge after 19 years. Prior to that, he practiced law in Pickens, and served as a public defender for four years. He was involved in the Meals on Wheels in Pickens County, and had been in scouting for over fifty years, serving as a district chairman of the Blue Ridge Council Executive Board, receiving the Silver Beaver Award, the District Award of Merit, and Cubmaster of Pack 51. Joe, in conjunction with Jim Kaplan, was instrumental in organizing and constructing the Playground of Promise with the Pickens Recreation Department.

In addition to his loving wife, Joe is survived by two sons; Joseph O'Bryan Board (Laurie) of Huntsville, Alabama and Bruce Evans Board of Pickens; a daughter; Susan Amy Stemper (Jim) of Clemmons, NC; a brother; Harry Robert Board (Christine) of Houma, Louisiana; and a sister; Barbara Board Laughan of Chesterfield, Virginia. He is also survived by five grandchildren; Stephanie Elizabeth Board, Kourtney Susan Board, Jack Larson Stemper, Marion Elizabeth Board, and Shuler Rose Stemper; one great-grandchild; Aaron Thomas Board; and a first cousin; Evans "Buddy" King (Joyce)of Clarksburg, Virginia.

Memorial Services will be conducted at 4:00 PM on Sunday, January, 1, 2017 at Grace United Methodist Church, 309 E Cedar Rock St, Pickens, SC 29671 with the Rev. James McCoy-Bruce officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will include the American Legion Post 11. The family will receive friends at the Church on Sunday prior to the service from 2:00 PM until 3:45 PM.

The family is at the residence.
