Joseph "Joe" Ray Fowler, Jr, 66, of Easley, SC and husband of Gale Ford Fowler, passed away Thursday, August 15, 2013 at Heartland Health and Rehab in Greenville.
Mr. Fowler was born in Honea Path, SC, the son of the late Joseph Ray Fowler, Sr and Ellen Cox Fowler. He was a graduate of U.S.C. with a B.S. Degree in Engineering and was an Assistant District Engineer with Norfolk Southern Railroad for 28 years before his retirement. The railroad was his second love after his family. The men he worked with were like family and at times he seemed to spend more time with them than at home. He deeply cared and respected them and was proud of the work they accomplished. He formed many lifetime friendships throughout his railroad career. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam War and was a Methodist.
Joe loved to garden and never saw an azalea he didn't like. He loved orchids and spent hours trying to keep them alive and growing. He got such pleasure when they did bloom.
Joe had a great heart that was loving, kind, generous, forgiving, understanding and full of pride for his family. He enjoyed every minute he spent with his children and grandchildren and always had a twinkle in his eyes when speaking about his children.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Michael Fowler and his wife, Stephanie, of Norfolk, Virginia and Shane Fowler and his wife, Rica, of Suffolk, Virginia; and he welcomed with an open heart and arms three stepchildren, Warren, Guy and Anita; his first wife and the mother of his children, Mary Diane Fowler, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; four grandchildren, Samantha, Jake, Alex and Benjamin; 5 step-grandchildren, Haley, Adiam, Natalie, Lily and Violet.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Fowler.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday, August 27, 2013 in the Chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Powdersville Road, Easley.
