Judith Fletcher
FitzSimons
Sep 29, 1937 — Oct 4, 2026
Judith Fletcher FitzSimons “Judy” passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on September 29, 1937, in Bristol, CT, to the late
Franklin and Melanie Fletcher, Judy grew up with her late brother, Terry Fletcher, and was surrounded by a large extended family that provided the foundation and a lifelong appreciation of her roots and strong family values.
After graduating from Bristol High School, Judy attended Bennett College in Millbrook, NY, where she graduated in 1960 with a degree in Interior Design. On September 10, 1960, she married her childhood sweetheart, the late Edmund “Ted” FitzSimons in Bristol, CT. Together, they built a fulfilling life defined by faith, entrepreneurial spirit, civic commitment, and a deep devotion to family.
Judy and Ted moved from Connecticut to Tampa, FL, in 1969. As a dedicated mother to three active children, she enjoyed every ball game, swim meet, play, and volunteer opportunity. Driven by a practical need and a creative solution, Judy founded and ran a retail business providing quality competitive swimwear to athletes and aquatic enthusiasts.
Upon retiring in 1987, Judy and Ted moved to Ft. Myers Beach (FMB), FL, a place they had often visited since childhood. She became deeply involved in the community through local civic leadership, community development, and serving on the board of the Beach Library. Along with Ted, Judy helped shape the future of their local coastline by developing the very first land use plan for Estero Island (FMB). She was a founding member of the FMB Civic Association and was integral to the successful incorporation of the Town of Fort Myers Beach, a lasting contribution to the region’s growth and preservation.
In 2019, Judy moved to the Foothills retirement community in Easley, SC, to be closer to her daughter. She surrounded herself with friends and engaged in a vibrant array of activities. A gifted artisan with a lifelong passion for quilting, her intricately crafted quilts were displayed throughout the community, bringing warmth and color to all who saw them.
Judy is survived by her children, F. Scott FitzSimons (Francine) of Tampa, FL, Kathleen F. Hamlin (David) of Easley, SC, and Jeffrey D. FitzSimons of Jacksonville Beach, FL; her five grandchildren, Megan, Erin, Casey, Justin, and Zachary; seven great-grandchildren; and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother.
Judy was a devoted mother, entrepreneur, and woman whose life reflects faith, determination, and wholehearted support for those she loved. She was a lifelong animal lover with a special place in her heart for dogs. They provided the joy and comfort she needed, especially at the end of her life.
A memorial service will be held at the Foothills Retirement Community Chapel in Easley. The date and time will be announced soon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to one of the following organizations:
• Grey Muzzle Society: Provides grants and support to senior dog rescue and sanctuary organizations.
• K9s For Warriors: Trains and provides service dogs for veterans suffering from PTSD and other traumas.
• Canine Companions: Enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs at no charge.
