Mrs. Judy Garland Pew (82) of West Union, South Carolina, died following a long illness on March 9, 2025, at Woodlands Place Senior Living in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Judy was born in Saco, Maine, but relocated to South Carolina in 1964. She is predeceased by her husband, John Pew, of fifty-one years, parents Bernard and Bertha Garland, sister Avis Hanson, father and mother-in-law Wallace and Beulah Pew, and sister-in-law Alice Ann (Joe) Hoff of West Virginia. She is survived by her son John Paul (Kelly) Pew of West Union, SC, and Wallace Garland (Becky) Pew of Easley, SC. In addition, Judy has two beloved grandchildren Alyssa Paige (Josh) Gmerek of Monroe, Ga. and Harrison Blake (Morgan) Pew of Seneca, S.C. and five great-grandchildren Hayden, Cayson, and Layken Gmerek and Spencer and Blaire Pew. In addition, Judy is survived by her sisters Joan Atkinson of Hollis Center, Maine, Marleen (Don) Holmes of Rock Hill, SC, and her brother-in-law Frank Hanson of Portland, Maine.
Judy was a graduate of Maine Medical School of Nursing where she earned her RN diploma. She later earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees at St. Joseph’s College in Standish, Maine. She served as a nurse at both Greenville General and St. Francis Hospital in S.C. At the time of her retirement in 2008, Judy was the Senior Risk Manager at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, SC.
Judy and her husband John were long-time members of McCarter Presbyterian Church in Greenville, South Carolina. She and John were married at McCarter in 1965 and remained loyal members during their lifetimes. Judy, a dedicated member of McCarter, received the Presbyterian Women Honorary Life Membership.
The family would like to thank Agape Hospice Care of Spartanburg and Linda Cale of Senior Care Authority Carolinas for their love, support, and guidance for Judy and her family. Without them, this journey would have been even more difficult.
A private memorial service, officiated by her nephew Michael Hoff of Ohio, will be scheduled at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to McCarter Presbyterian Church, 2 Pelham Road, Greenville, SC.
