Julia Bates Hunnicutt, of 302 Grace Avenue and wife of Henry Wallace Hunnicutt, died Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at Countryside Living Center.

Born in Pickens, a daughter of the late Clive and Annie Belle Henderson Bates, she was a graduate of Pickens High School, Lander University and Southern Wesleyan University and earned her Masters Degree in Education from Clemson University. She was a retired teacher and was honored as the Pickens County Teacher of the Year in 1985 and a part of West End School is named the Julia B. Hunnicutt Hall.
She was a charter member of the Xi Chapter, Alpha Delta Kappa National Honorary Teacher's Sorority, member and Easley representative of the Pickens County Retired Teachers Association, member of the Easley Woman's Club, the Yellow Jessamine Garden Club, was the former Director of the Easley Friends of the Library and Meals on Wheels. As an active member of the Easley First Baptist Church, she was a member of the WMU, the Frances Eller Group, served on numerous committees, was a sunday school teacher for many years and was one of the first women elected to the Board of Deacons.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by sisters, Dorothy Bates of Pickens, Frances B. Vaughan of Monroe, NC; nephews and nieces, Gene and Sheri Vaughan and their children, Tyler and Garrett, Lisa and Timothy Coley and their children, Madeline, Amelia, and Julian; Dena and James Stackhouse and Carrie Whitaker and Preston Stackhouse.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Bates; two brothers, William Bates and Clive Reuben Bates and his wife Louella; and a brother-in-law, Ray E. Vaughan.

Funeral services will be 3 PM, Friday at Easley First Baptist Church with Rev. Drs. John Adams, Lloyd Batson and David Turner officiating. Entombment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2:45, Friday prior to the service at the church.
