Karen Anne Sconce, 87, of Clemson, SC, passed away on June 29, 2026. Karen was born in Redlands, CA, to the late Raymond Willis and Pearl Lydia Putnam.

Karen’s academic journey began at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 1961. Driven by a dedication to helping others through education, she later completed a master’s degree in education, marking the beginning of a long and impactful professional career.

Her first teaching position was in Acadia, California. In 1969, Karen relocated to New York, where she dedicated 25 distinguished years as an educator at Pound Ridge Elementary in Pound Ridge, NY. Throughout her tenure, she was recognized for her unwavering commitment to her students, her colleagues, and the values of integrity and learning.

Following a fruitful career in education, Karen moved to Keowee Key in South Carolina, where she embraced the beauty of lake life with her husband, Charles, for 25 years. The transition to South Carolina opened new chapters of community involvement and advocacy. An avid animal advocate, Karen committed herself to protecting and caring for animals, spending many years volunteering at the Humane Society. Her selflessness extended further as she dedicated her time volunteering at Oconee Memorial Hospital Emergency Room and at Collins Children Home, impacting countless lives.

Karen’s life was a testament to service—whether in the classroom, in her volunteer work, or within her community. Her legacy lives on in the individuals she taught, the lives she touched, and the hearts she uplifted through her advocacy for both humans and animals.

Her presence will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Karen is survived by her cherished Husband of 65 years, Charles Edward Sconce; son, Steve Sconce (Kathryn Grindle); daughter, Sandra King; grandson, Carson King; brother, Richard Putnam (Dottie); and sister Judith Appleton.
