Easley

Kathleen (Kathy)  Margaretha Kennedy, 77, of Easley, wife of the late Kenneth Betke, passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2023, at her home.

Born in Detroit Michigan, she was a daughter of the late Charles Neil and Dora Kirchner Kennedy. Kathleen was a dedicated schoolteacher for special needs students at Burger school for the Autistic children in Garden City, Michigan.  Kathleen served as a source of inspiration for all of her students and colleagues until her retirement in 2005.  Her passion for teaching was evident in the way she interacted with her students, always striving to bring out their full potential. Kathleen’s hard work and commitment shone through the educational achievements of several generations of young minds.

Kathleen graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor's of Science  in emotionally impaired, and later earned a Master of Science in learning disabilities with a Certification in special education to teach autistic kids. Moreover, Kathleen served her country in the United States Air Force from 1965-1969 in New York, and Bangkok Thailand during Vietnam as an Administrative Specialist.

For several years Kathleen was an active member of the Autism Society of America and traveled to several Autism Conferences to learn more about how to better help her in teaching Autistic children and adults.

Besides being an exceptional educator and patriotic citizen, Kathleen loved spending time with family; she was particularly fond of her grandson Benjamin who brought much joy into her life.  Her loving heart extended beyond family and was enjoyed by those close to her within the community that she gave so much to. Kathleen had many hobbies and interests such as Acting in Community Theatre where she loved showcasing her stage skills. Additionally, she enjoyed dancing especially Tap, interpretive dance and Flamenco- you could witness that love of dance every time Kathleen hit the dancefloor! Alongside dancing, scouring garage sales for antiques and goodies was one of Kathleen’s favorite pastimes.

She is survived by her daughter, Valerie Wieckowski (Ryan); and grandson, Benjamin Wieckowski.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Neil Kennedy and Milton Kennedy; and two beloved fur babies, Heidi and Sidney.
