Katie C. Usrey
Clemson, SC

Katie Cummins Usrey, gracious Southern lady, garage sale hunter, and doting
grandmother, died October 7, 2015 at age 82.

Born in Nashville, TN to John O. Cummins and Margaret Craig Cummins, Katie's
signature traits were her bright smile and soft Southern drawl. A serious shopper, she
enjoyed discovering a flea market bargain or a beautiful piece of cut glass. She was a
classic dresser who never wore a pair of blue jeans and a wonderful cook who will be
remembered for her Sally Lunn bread, fudge brownies, and sausage swirls.

A graduate of Peabody College, Vanderbilt (BA) and Abilene Christian University (MA),
Katie worked as an elementary school librarian and high school English teacher.

Katie and her late husband, Malcolm O. Usrey, lived in Clemson for over 45 years
where they enjoyed time with friends, house projects, antiquing, and were members of
the Clemson Church of Christ. She taught childrenʼs Sunday school for decades and
lived by the prayer "help us to be mindful of the needs of others".

Katie spent her final years in Myrtle Beach to be near her daughter Elisabeth (Bettye)
Usrey Lackey, son-in-law Scott Lackey, and four grandchildren Taylor, Anna, Caroline,
and Emily.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, October 11, 2015 at the Clemson
Church of Christ.

Katie would have felt flowers for her funeral a frivolous expense, so
instead please send memorials to the Michael J. Fox Foundation to help cure the illness
she braved for 29 years, Parkinsonʼs disease. Michael J. Fox Foundation, PO Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741 or michaeljfox.org.

Condolences may be expressed online at www.robinsonfuneralhomes.com or at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central, SC.
