Kenneth John Russo

Kenneth John Russo, 78, passed away at his home in Salem, SC on May 12, 2009 after a brief battle with cancer, having won numerous prior challenges in his life. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, educator and architect.
Kenneth was born on April 12, 1931 in Passaic, NJ to the late Joseph C. and Teresa Strobel Russo. Kenneth received his bachelor's degree in architecture in 1957 from Oklahoma State University. He continued with work on his Masters in 1960 at the University of Pennsylvania where he was privileged to have worked under Louis Kahn. In 1965 he received the first Masters of Architecture degree awarded by the department at Clemson University and went on to join the faculty full time.
During his tenure Kenneth also worked for 17 years at J. E. Sirrine as a senior project designer; his roles at Clemson included professor of design, department head of architectural studies, professor in residence in Genoa Italy, and director of the Health Care Studio. He was the first faculty member to receive the Tau Sigma Delta Silver Medal, an award given by the students, making this the one award Kenneth valued the most. He was always known to be devoted to advancing his students' mastery of their own potential. He retired from Clemson University in July 1991, after teaching for 28 years as Professor Emeritus of Architecture. He is also Emeritus Architect of The SC Chapter of the American Institute of Architecture and The American Institute of Architecture.
Kenneth is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty Lou Randall. Kenneth is also survived by 2 children; Garth Russo (Spouse Natalie) of Athens, Georgia, and Melissa Wilbanks (Spouse Scott) of Easley, S.C., and grandchildren; Brian and Matthew Wilbanks of Easley, S.C. Their first child, Karen, preceded him in death as an infant.
Memorial Services will be 4 PM, Thursday, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, where Kenneth was a member for 46 years. Interment will follow at St. Paul's Episcopal Churchyard, Pendleton, SC.
Visitation in the church fellowship hall will precede the memorial service beginning at 3 PM.
