LARRY B. MASSEY - Clemson, SC

Larry B. Massey, 99, widow of Grace Young Massey, died Friday, April 28, 2006, at Clemson Area Retirement Center. He was born in Anderson County on July 21, 1906. He was affectionately known as "Big Daddy" by his family and many friends.

He was a 1927 graduate of Clemson University and at his death, was the oldest living Clemson Alumni. After graduation, he began teaching agriculture in the school at Jenkinsville where he met Grace Young who became his wife. He then became Superintendent of Schools in Wagner, SC. In 1932, he began his service with the Clemson College Extension Service; first serving as County Agent in Calhoun County and then County Agent in Orangeburg. In 1939, he became District Agent for the Piedmont District of the Extension Service located in Spartanburg. He moved to Clemson in 1956 and continued in his duties of District Agent. He retired in 1973 and continued to live in Clemson.

He was a member of Fort Hill Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder and Elder Emeriti. He was an IPTAY member for 65 years. He was one of the organizers of Clemson Area Retirement Center, The Downs. He and his wife were one of the first residents.

He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth M. Gage and husband, Gaston Jr; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Crowther and husband, Pete, and Ruth Knox and husband, Roger; and five great grandchildren, Lizbeth and Jake Crowther, and Gaston, Gage, and Grace Knox.

A memorial service will be Monday at 3:00 p.m. at Fort Hill Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service in Tarten Hall of the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fort Hill Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 399 College Avenue, Clemson, SC 29631.
