Easley
Leland Scott Hart, husband of Jane Voils Hart, passed away on January 30, 2013 at Foothills Presbyterian Community Health Center in Easley, SC. He was born on March 10, 1923 in Greenville County and was the son of the late Henry Earl and Lora Hawkins Hart. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Shipman Hart, in 1994.
Scott graduated from Travelers Rest High School. After serving briefly in the Navy during WW II, he received a medical discharge and then began working with Southern Bell. His career spanned several Upstate cities before retirement as Plant Manager in Easley after 41 years of service.
Scott was a member of Easley Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon, Elder and Trustee. He was a member of the Lions Club for over 60 years and served as a past president of the Easley Lions Club. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow award for his dedicated service. Scott had a strong commitment to community volunteerism and worked with the Boy Scouts of America, Easley Troup 26 for many years. After retirement, he also served on the South Carolina Foster Care Review Board for 14 years.
"Papa" loved his family and always let each of them know through both his words and deeds. He was our personal weatherman and auto mechanic. He enjoyed gardening, playing bridge and tennis with friends, watching ACC/SEC sports and the Atlanta Braves, hiking with his grandchildren and walking the beach at Hilton Head. His sense of humor and his appreciation for all his family and friends were evident even until his passing. He was the "sunshine" of all our lives and embedded values and "life's lessons" that we will always cherish and exemplify.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his three daughters: Martha Herbert (Michael) of Greenville, SC; Karen Strickland (Terry) and Emily Patterson (Butch) both of Florida and one stepson, Joseph Thompson of Gainesville, GA. Also surviving are five grandchildren: Tes Strickland Flassig (Kevin), Kayce Strickland Looper (Michael), Scott Patterson (Becky), Brad Patterson and Maggie Herbert; two step grandchildren, David Herbert and Amelia Thompson; seven great-grandchildren and two sisters, Earlene Hart Robertson (Charles) and Frankie Hart Edwards, both of Travelers Rest. He is also survived by many loved nieces and nephews. Scott was predeceased by his five brothers (Theron, Bryan, Boyce, Don and Charles) and one sister (Irene Hart Kelly).
A Memorial Service will be held at Easley Presbyterian Church on Saturday, February 2, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends after the service in the church parlor. A private committal service will be held for the immediate family at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
