Leonard Darvin "Shorty" "Skinny" Oates, 93, died Monday, January 16, 2012 at his home following a short illness surrounded by his family.
Born in Easley, SC, Leonard was a son of the late Darvin Rufus and Sibbie Florence Phillips Oates. He was a member of Cannon Memorial Baptist Church. He retired from Woodside Mills, Cateechee after 32 years of service. "Shorty" was a charter member of the Central Rescue Squad and a long time member of the Central Volunteer Fire Department. For many years, he was always on duty for any structure fire or drownings in Pickens County operating the only portable Cascade System used to refill the oxygen tanks for all units serving the county. In addition to his longtime work with the Rescue Squad and Fire Departments, Leonard worked with both Central Garage Wrecker Service and George Reid Wrecker Service along with working for Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home and also being a volunteer overseeing the people having to provide community service for the Town of Central.
Surviving are sons, Milton Oates of the home, Mickey (Judy)Oates of Pendleton, Sammy (Vikki Sue) Oates of Seneca; daughters, Louise (Gene)Rochester of Walhalla, Linda Whitlock, Gail Elrod, and Mary Ruth (Larry) Black all of Liberty, Debra (James "Slick") Chambers of Newry and Becky Oates of the home; 29 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Leonard was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Jimmie Lou Bell Oates; a son, Marion Oates, a daughter, Nancy Jane Oates; brothers, Marshall, Bill, Romaine, Eugene and Dennis "Jody" Oates; and a sister, Eunice Arnold.
Funeral services will be 2 PM, Thursday in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home with burial to follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM, Wednesday at the funeral home.
