Leonard R. Woike
Pickens, SC
Leonard Robert Woike died on Sunday December 29, 2019 at the age of 89. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut on June 24, 1930, the eighth of nine children born to Emil and Emma Woike.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Argylle "Sam" Duckett Woike, his daughter, Christy (Bruce) Scott, three grandchildren Preston (Kathryn) Scott, Stephanie (Kyle) Hatton, and Ian Scott. He is also survived by his honorary granddaughter and great granddaughter, Anna and Reagan Dalton.
Leonard attended Oregon State University, where he graduated in 1958 with a degree in Forest Management. Immediately after graduating, he went to work for the U.S. Forest Service, initially in the northwest. In 1959 he was transferred to Greenwood, SC to Sumter National Forest. It was during this period that he grew to love the Carolinas. He was transferred to Kisatche National Forest in Alexandria, LA to work as an appraiser in 1970, and remained there until his retirement in 1993, after which he and Sam moved to Pickens, SC, where they bought a parcel of land, built a log home and settled into life as retirees.
Retirement allowed Leonard time to fully engage in the activities he had always loved. He was a talented woodworker and had a passion for gardening and cooking. He completed a master gardening course at Clemson University, and planted a large garden every year. He also expanded his woodworking shop and could often be found working on projects. His friends and neighbors certainly benefitted from Leonard's talents, receiving home grown vegetables, canned and baked goods, often packed in wooden baskets he built. One of his favorite past times was sitting on the back porch with Sam, their dogs and any friends who happened to drop by, entertaining them with stories of times past.
Leonard attended the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church his entire life and was extremely active in both Redeemer Lutheran Church in Alexandria and Eternal Shephard Lutheran Church in Seneca, serving as an elder for many years in both congregations.
His memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 15th at Eternal Shephard Lutheran Church, 220 Carson Road, Seneca at 11:00 am. Visitation will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. His family requests that any memorial gifts be made to the church in his name.
