Obituary

Linda Smith Jones, of Greenville, SC and Mt. Pleasant, SC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Born in Newberry, SC in 1941, she was a daughter of the late Clifford Twining Smith and the late Helen O’ Dell Smith. After graduating from Furman University, Linda married the late Edgar Eugene (“Gene”) Jones II, and they made their home in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.

Linda’s passions were faith, family, and friends. She used her gifts of encouragement and teaching to share her Christian faith. As a member of St. Andrews Church, she was active in the Prayer Ministry and served on the Vestry. Linda was a devoted mother to her three children and “Yadah” to her seven grandchildren. She chose her grandmother name, Yadah, a Hebrew word meaning to “to give thanks and praise,” and fully embodied these qualities in her devotion to family. Linda’s friends enjoyed her time, her smile, and zest for life. As a talented flower arranger, she loved to gift beautiful flower arrangements to friends to celebrate special occasions.

She is survived by daughters, Catherine Elizabeth (“Beth”) Smith and Barbara Johnston (Merrill, Jr.); son, Gene Jones; grandchildren, Merrill Johnston, III (Jayne), Wilson Smith (Parker Grace Farrow), Elizabeth Fowler (Ashton), Helen Mann (Luke), Catherine Smith, Caroline Johnston and Carter Jones; and sisters, Sylvia Crook (Charlie) and Mary Helen Ragland (Harry).

The family will hold a private memorial service in Edisto, SC at a later date.

May all who knew Linda remember her sweet and joyful spirit. She was a gem and leaves a legacy of faith, generosity, and kindness. Linda will truly be missed.
