Lois Finley of 500 Downs Loop, Clemson, died early Wednesday morning, July 24, at age 84. The widow of Edgar Lawrence Finley, she was born Emma Lois Burnside. A native of Ninety-Six and the daughter of Heath Pratt Burnside and William Lawrence Burnside, Jr., she lived most of her life in Seneca and Clemson.
She married Edgar in Ninety-Six, SC and together they had three children. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law: Joy and John Palmer and San and Bob McCleskey; five grandchildren: Keith, Neal, and Joanna Palmer and Shawn and Renee McCleskey Merriam; and two great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her daughter, Andrea Finley.
She went to Winthrop College where she earned a BS in Home Economics and a teaching certificate. She loved teaching, first as a high school home economics teacher in Seneca and for three decades as a fifth and sixth grade teacher at Pendleton Elementary.
She was a member of the Clemson United Methodist Church and had been an active member of United Methodist Women, women's circle, and church social groups. She enjoyed the neighborhood garden club, sewing for her family, and beach vacations. She and Edgar were charter members of the square dance club "Paws and Taws". She loved to travel, making trips overseas with the church seniors group and other friends. During most of her 7-year residence at the Clemson Downs Health Care unit, she was an honorary social director, taking an active part in brightening the lives of others.
Visitation will be 2:00 3:00 PM, Saturday, July 28 at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 PM in the chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Clemson Downs Volunteers, 500 Downs Loop, Clemson or to your favorite charity.
