Lorena Bernice Gillespie went to be with the Lord on December 16, 2011 at Clemson Downs Health Care Center, Clemson, SC.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Monday at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, 827 Highway 93, Clemson. Entombment will follow in Oconee Memorial Park, Seneca, SC.
Visitation will be from 10 AM to 10:45 AM, Monday prior to the service at the church.
Lorena Bernice Gillespie was born on January 2, 1922 in Oconee County, SC. She was the tenth child born to Jacob H. and Mamie Mann Gillespie. She was preceded in death by her parents and all six of her brothers and all five of her sisters.
Bernice attended Richland Elementary School and Seneca, SC High School. She earned a BS degree in Business Administration, Magna Cum Laude, from Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC and Master of Religious Education degree from Carver School of Missions and Social Work, Louisville, KY. She also held an Education Specialist Degree in Childhood Education from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
Bernice's accounting work experience included 10 years with Tennessee Eastman, Kingsport, TN; two years with Elmendorf AFB and Corp of District Engineers and 25 years with Munns-Hulbert Inc Dental Offices in Anchorage, AK.
Bernice's mission work experience began as a student summer missionary with SBC Home Mission Board in California the summers of 1953 and 1954. She served as Office Manager/Bookkeeper for Alaska Baptist Convention, Anchorage from 1956-1968.
Bernice's calling was in teaching preschool children. Her volunteer ministries in Alaska included 44 years as preschool Sunday School teacher at Immanuel Baptist Church and 25 years teaching international children in ESL ministry at Grandview Baptist Church. For several years she taught preschoolers in SS at Fairview Baptist Center and in MOPS program at Sunset Hills Baptist Church, Anchorage.
Bernice spent 43 wonderful years (Oct 1954-Mar 1998) in Alaska. She enjoyed Alaska's winter snow, northern lights, snow capped mountain peaks as well as the long summer days, beautiful flowers and camping trips. Bernice left behind many Alaskan little and big friends whom she loved.
Bernice moved to Clemson, SC in March 1998. For 10 years she was caregiver for her sisters Nina Gillespie and Aileen Moore. She continued teaching preschoolers in Sunday School and ESL ministry for several years at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, Clemson where she was a member.
On June 11, 2008, Bernice was admitted to Lila Doyle Nursing Facility, Seneca, SC. Since June 23, 2009 she has been a resident at Clemson Downs Health Care Center, Clemson, SC.
