Lorraine Charlotte Maurer
Easley, SC
Lorraine Charlotte Maurer, better known to many as Lorri and to her first great grandbaby and namesake, Charlotte, as Great Grammy, died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, March 20, 2016 after a 10 year experience with dementia and more recently, advanced cancer at the home of her daughter’s family where she was loved, doted on and had her every need met 24/7. She was blessed!
Lorraine grew up in Massachusetts the daughter of Ralph and Loretta Parker, where she had a younger brother they lovingly called Sonny, and a sister, Leatrice, who was one year older who would be her best friend. She told of many times of friends taking the train to the big city of Boston to window shop and buy delicacies in the candy shop for the long ride home. She was a star basketball player on her high school team and graduated as the valedictorian of her high school. After meeting and marrying Robert Maurer (Bob), and having 4 children in 6 years, they had enough of the cold weather, put everything into a U-Haul and moved the family to Florida. They eventually moved to Charleston where she lived until moving to the Greenville area near her daughter 2 years ago. Lorraine never lost her very strong Bostonian accent.
Lorraine was 88 years old when she died having lived a long life, doing many of her favorite things like being a housewife raising four children, later working jobs she enjoyed, putting all 4 children through college, caring for her aged mother, playing her favorite game of Scrabble, traveling all over the world, playing with her 11 grandchildren, volunteering at local hospitals, playing golf several times a week with friends, and getting lots of exercise.
Having an adventurous spirit, Lorraine made sure that when the family went on vacations, it was always to a new location, never going to the same place twice. When the kids were grown, she and her husband, Bob, who died in 1999 from his battle with cancer, traveled all throughout the USA and Bermuda and the Caribbean. Then she either took one of her children or traveled with a group to China, Australia, Kenya, Hawaii, Russia, South America, all over Europe and on and on and on. It wasn’t because they were wealthy that she was able to travel but that she and Bob were very frugal and careful with their limited finances.
Lorraine’s many activities including her work, travel, volunteering, golf and playing Scrabble revolved around socializing with her friends which was her passion. Special thanks and appreciation to Marsha Lowman of Homestead Hospice who daily provided meticulous, loving care to our mother for many months.
Lorraine is survived by her 4 children: Robin Pennington (Ashley) of Charleston, Richard Maurer of Fairfax Station, VA, Terri Stribling (Ken) of Easley, SC and Tracey Maurer (David) of Jericho, VT, grandchildren Joy Pennington, Sean Pennington, Brantley Goforth (Austin), Kennedy Stribling, Alex Maurer, Zack Maurer, Jonnie Maurer, Ariana Jones, Dakota Jones, Dyani Jones, great granddaughter, Charlotte Goforth, her brother Ralph “Sonny “ Parker (Patty) and many nieces and nephews. “Grammy” was predeceased by her 20 year old grandson, Jake Stribling, by two weeks.
