Louis Thompson Runge

d. February 20, 2017

Louis Thompson Runge of Greenville, SC, died on February 20, 2017, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.

Louis, known by his family and friends as Louie, was the son of the late Hans Eyl Runge and Gertrude Thompson Runge, and was born in Greenwood, South Carolina. Louie attended Davidson College during which time he played guitar for the country and western group, the Dismembered Tennesseans. College was interrupted by service in the Air Force during the Korean War, where upon completing his service, Louie finished college at Clemson University, graduating cum laude. Thereafter he started a long, successful career in textiles, working for Abney Mills, Woodside Mills, Dan River Mills, and retiring as Executive Vice President of Alice Manufacturing in 1987.

Louis served on many boards including the Poinsett Club, Cotillion Club, American Textile Manufacturers Institute, PIYC and Christ Church Episcopal School, and was a long standing and devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church, serving in various capacities and chairing numerous committees.

Louie loved to travel, but no time was better spent than with his family at Lake Burton, Georgia.

He is survived by his cherished wife of 65 years, Evelyn Thornton Runge, and 5 children, Collette Runge Torghele and husband Bob Torghele of Ogden, Utah; Eyleen Runge Barnes and husband Brook Barnes of Greenville, SC; Louis T. Runge, Jr. (Tom) and his wife Anne Runge of Columbia, SC; Charles Eyl Runge and wife Luanne Runge of Greenville, SC and William T. Runge (Bill) and wife Ashley Runge of Greenville, SC; 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Eyleen Runge Martin.

Louie will be most remembered as a dear and loyal friend, a loving and treasured father and most of all, a devoted husband to his Ebie. Known and dearly loved as Opa, he loved and led his family well and will be greatly missed.

The family will be receiving friends at the home of Bill and Ashley Runge, 36 Quail Hill Drive, Greenville, SC on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 from 5:00-7:00p.m. We will celebrate Louie's life at Christ Church Episcopal on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at graveside. The family invites all to join them for a reception afterwards in the McKissick Refectory and the McCall parlor.
