Louise Cameron Mills Mason
Easley, SC
Louise Mills Mason, 90, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Saturday, October 14, 2017.
Born April 21, 1927, in Carthage, MS, to the late Emily Louise Garrett Mills and James Dickens Mills, she was the beloved wife of Hugh Smylie Mason.
Louise attended Carthage High School and graduated as valedictorian in June 1945. She was also a drummer in the school's band, and in 1944, they were invited to march in the Mardi Gras Parade on Canal Street in New Orleans. After high school, Louise worked in Jackson, MS, for the CPA firm of Williams and Co. in the tax department. After a few years, she returned to Carthage where she and Smylie were married at Carthage Methodist Church on June 4, 1948. The couple then moved to La Marque, TX, where Smylie had gotten a job with Amoco Chemicals in Texas City. While Smylie was serving in the Army in Landstuhl, Germany, during the Korean War, Louise made a two-month journey by boat to be with Smylie for 18 months during 1952-53. After their return, their three children were born in La Marque, and Louise also began to work for Amoco. In 1977, Amoco moved Smylie to South Carolina to help build a new plant in Mount Pleasant. Louise also worked at the plant in the transportation department. She retired in 1989 after 14 years. In 1992, the couple moved to Easley, SC, to be closer to two of their children.
Louise was a warm, sweet, gracious Southern lady with an infectious laugh, who always had a smile and a hug for you. She was a wonderful cook, and "Grandma's chocolate cake" was requested for every birthday. Louise's favorite thing was to spend time with family. She loved her brothers and sisters dearly, and had an especially close bond with her youngest sister, "Puggar". She doted on her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and considered her children's friends as her own. The most special person in her life, though, was Smylie - he was the love of her life, from high school sweethearts to a long, happy marriage of over 69 years. We all cherish our memories of her and will miss her precious spirit.
Surviving, in addition to her husband are three children, Debra Mason Smith (Burney Dowler) of Pasadena, TX, Michael Smylie Mason (Kay) of Easley, SC, and James Patrick Mason (Lisa) of Hilton Head, SC; seven grandchildren, Rachael Smith Audish (Dave), Samantha Warren Pastor, Anne Mills Mason, Griffin Moore Mason, Christina Mae Mason, Jonathan Patrick Mason, and Julia Louise Mason; and six great-grandchildren, Lilla, Logan, Adam, and Kira Audish, and Rueben and Aliana Pastor. She is also survived by a sister, Marjorie Kyzar of Tallulah, LA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three brothers, Maury Mills, James Dickens Mills, Jr., and Joseph Garrett Mills; and four sisters, Eleanor Tolles, Virginia Thomas, Frances Jones, and Mary Elizabeth "Puggar" Thompson.
The family would also like to thank Rhonda Cassell and Savannah Marks for the wonderful love and care they gave to Louise.
