Emma Lucile Newton Stuckey, 100, of Central, SC, passed away December 29, 2024.
Lucile was born September 20, 1924 in Pickens County, eldest daughter of the late Augustus Franklin Newton and Cornelia Julia Greene Newton.
Lucile is survived by her son Keith Newton Stuckey (Joan), and her daughters Elizabeth Stuckey Mabry (Buford) and Mary Stuckey Freeman (Caleb), her daughter-in-law Remy Valmores Stuckey, and by her sister Evelyn Newton Smith. Lucile was predeceased by her husband James Henry Stuckey of Kingstree SC, her son James Henry Stuckey, Jr, her grandson Robert Keith Stuckey, her granddaughter Michelle Stuckey, her brothers Edwin Earl Newton and Alfred Franklin Newton, and by her sister Martha Sue Newton Lesley.
Lucile was blessed with 100 years of life and love from her large family. Known to all as “Mama Ceil”, she is survived by 7 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
At her recent 100th birthday celebration this past September, Mama Ceil looked beautiful. She enjoyed the singing, food and stories shared by her family, reminiscing about her childhood in Central, SC and her time at Central High School and Wesleyan Methodist College. After WWII, she met Kingstree native James Henry Stuckey, a Clemson cadet and pilot during the war. In Kingstree, they raised their four children: Jimmy, Betty, Keith and Mary. A natural born teacher, Lucile loved teaching the first, second and third graders, and she led many Sunday school and bible study classes throughout her lifetime. Lucile was also a natural born cook (a talent inherited from her mother); she canned fresh vegetables from the garden, made jams and jellies, and baked the best homemade coconut cake on the planet. Lucile was an avid reader of biographies, healing food books, and especially the Bible, which she read many times, always marking her favorite verses and writing her prayers in the margins of each copy she took up. Those 17 Bibles are now her family’s most cherished heirlooms. Lucile often volunteered at the voters registration office; she cared about helping people register to vote. Lucile also cared about animals; she always had pet cats and dogs, and she enjoyed feeding the birds and all the animals on the farm. Lucile's greatest loving care was shared with her children and grandchildren. Mama Ceil cherished her large family, and her love for them has been returned 17 times over.
