Mabel Brown Richardson, 88, of Clemson, passed away Sunday, May 30, 2010 at Clemson Downs Healthcare.
Mrs. Richardson was born on April 10, 1922, in Elberton, GA, the daughter of the late Thomas Clyde Brown and Lois Seymore Brown. She received her BS degree from Georgia State College for Women in 1943 and earned her MS degree from Clemson University in 1961 in Zoology. She and her beloved husband, Joel, moved to Clemson in 1948 where he began his teaching career at the college. She initially taught high school in Six Mile and moved to Daniel High School with its inception in 1955. She taught Biology, Chemistry, and Art at Daniel for almost 30 years. She developed and taught the first advanced biology class for high school in the State of South Carolina. In 1971, she was recognized as Teacher of the Year for her excellence in instruction. For numerous years, she was the staff advisor to the students that prepared Daniel's yearbooks. Mrs. Richardson truly loved her students and really enjoyed teaching them.
Mrs. Richardson and her husband, Joel, were long time RV camper that saw 46 of the lower 48 states on camping trips. She was an artist painting in various media, carver of wood caricatures, and avid reader. She also loved to knit, cross-stitch, and crocheted. She truly enjoyed life at Clemson and raising her family there. Later in life, they enjoyed their winter time visits to Estero, FL, at their little home there. She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Clemson and participated in the Baptist Women's Circle.
Mrs. Richardson was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joel L. Richardson, her son Joel Kenneth Richardson and her sister Helen Brown Thompson, and is survived by her; son George Edward Richardson and wife, Dee; grandchildren, Jason Kenneth Richardson and wife Erin, Joel Dean Richardson, Lisa Michelle Richardson Overby, Elizabeth Ann Richardson Mendoza and Husband Tony; and two great-granddaughters, Taylor Ann Mendoza and Kenlee Hayes Richardson.
Funeral services will be 2 PM, Thursday at First Baptist Church in Clemson with Rev. Dr. Rusty Brock officiating. Private committal services will be in Old Stone Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church from 1 PM until 2 PM.
