Margaret Newall

November 22, 1915 — February 28, 2013

Margaret H. "Peg" Newall, 97, resident of Anderson, S.C., near Pendleton, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at Rainey Hospice House, Hospice of the Upstate. She was born in Port Sunlight, England, and emigrated to the U.S. with her family in 1921 and settled in Lawrence, Mass.

After graduating from Lawrence High School in 1933, she attended Burdett's Business School and the Northern New England School of Religious Education. While employed by Essex Savings and Loan, she met and married William C. "Bill" Newall of South Lawrence in 1944.

After Bill completed service in the U.S. Army in Italy, the couple settled in Lawrence and Georgetown, Mass., and had two children, Janet and William "Billy" Jr. They later moved to Kennebunk, Maine, where Peg became associate director of the Brickstore Museum, and owned and operated a gift shop, The Running Tide, in Kennebunkport. She was also active in the Young Republicans, Girl Scouts of America and the Maine Arts and Crafts Association.

The family moved to Clemson, S.C., in 1959 for Bill's work. Peg worked briefly for Clemson University and then began a career with South Carolina National Bank until 1972, when the couple moved to Lubbock, Texas. There she became executive administrative assistant at Hemphill-Wells department store.

She retired in 1986, moved to Anderson, S.C., near family, and began a long career of volunteering. She served as a docent at Ashtabula Historic House in Pendleton, delivered Meals on Wheels until age 90 and helped in the financial office of Clemson United Methodist Church until age 93.

She's survived by son Billy Newall (Liz) of Anderson; daughter Janet Bowers (Dennis) of Atlanta; grandchildren Ellie Newall Powell of Anderson; Will Newall of Pflugerville, Texas; Douglas Newton of Loganville, Ga.; Grace Newton of Grayson, Ga.; John Newton of Duluth, Ga.; and great-grandchildren Bryanna and Ian Buford; Aaron and Jordan Newton; and Emma Newton.

A memorial service will be at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central, S.C., March 9, 2013, at 4 p.m., followed by visitation with the family. Interment will be at a later date in West Parrish Cemetery in Andover, Mass.
