Maria Penas, affectionately known as Nona, passed away on October 26, 2023, at the age of 83. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who touched the lives of many with her kind heart and selfless nature.
Born on October 10th, 1940, in Capivari, Brazil, a daughter of the late Pedro and Maria Rodrigues De Jesus. Nona led a fulfilling life dedicated to her family and her business. She owned a successful seamstress business where she showcased her exceptional skills in the art of sewing. Her clients were always impressed by her attention to detail and impeccable craftsmanship. Her personality shone through in everything she did. She had a wonderful sense of humor that brought joy to those around her. Whether it was a witty remark or a playful joke, Nona had a way of brightening any room with her laughter. She was truly the life of the party and could effortlessly put a smile on anyone's face. As a mother, Nona was devoted and loving. She raised her children with unconditional love and instilled in them values of kindness and empathy. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and she cherished every moment spent with them. She was always there to offer guidance, support, and sage advice whenever they needed it. Apart from her family, she had a strong passion for travel. Exploring new places brought her immense joy and fulfillment. Spain and Brazil held a special place in her heart as she visited them numerous times. During her trips to Brazil, Nona always carried an extra suitcase filled with essentials to distribute among those less fortunate. Her acts of compassion touched many lives and inspired others to follow in her footsteps. One of her favorite ways to travel was through cruises. Cruising allowed her to indulge in relaxation while witnessing breathtaking sights across the globe. Whether it was soaking up the sun on deck or exploring ports of call, she found tranquility in sailing the high seas. She attended Tabernacle Baptist Church in Greenville, South Carolina.
She is survived by her three sons, Charlie Otero, Michael Otero (Kim), and Joe Otero (Terri); two brothers, Osmir De Jesus, and Cacaio De Jesus; eight grandchildren, Nick, Amanda (Evan), Kyle, Jamie (Lindsay), Levi (Lexi), Scotty (Summer), Andrew (Brittany), and Katelyn (Cole); and seven great-grandchildren, Peyton, Haven, Riley, Willa, Mia, Waylon, and Beau.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Angel Otero Penas; and six siblings.
The family will host a celebration of Nona’s life at 5:00 PM on Friday, November 10, 2023, at Parisview Baptist Church, 100 Bud St., Greenville, SC 29617.
