Martha Dorn Cox

June 6, 1934 — June 25, 2024

Flovilla, GA

 Martha Dorn Cox

Martha, born June 6,1934, was a daughter of the late Reverend C.O. Dorn and Clara Young Dorn. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Valerie Ann Cox, her fun-loving sister, Margaret Curran, seven wonderful grandchildren, five precious great-grandchildren, several nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her sister, Carolyn Dorn Smith and her brother, Chalmers Dorn.

Martha graduated from Mount Carmel High School in Jackson, Kentucky. She was also a proud graduate of Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, and for decades enthusiastically displayed an Asbury University bumper sticker on her car! For thirty years, she taught in elementary schools in South Carolina, teaching all grade levels. Her longest tenure was at the Woodfields Elementary School in Greenwood, South Carolina where she taught both fourth grade and, in her later years, special education classes. She cherished her time as a special ed teacher and was particularly devoted to her students who had special needs.

She enjoyed sewing, traveling, cooking and baking and delighted in sharing her baked goods and other treats. It was her custom at Christmas to bake numerous mouth-watering fruitcakes for family and friends, far and wide. Throughout her life, she loved spending time with family and friends, playing games, and sharing adventures. She was indeed very adventurous. Two years ago, at the age of 88, she embarked on a 10,000 mile cross-country trip from Georgia to California, doing most of the driving on her own. This trip was something she had wanted to do for years and finally she did it!

She was a lifelong attendee at Indian Springs Holiness Camp Meeting in Flovilla, Georgia and was especially dedicated to this community. An active volunteer there, she could often be found painting a room or completing small carpentry jobs. Annually, she read all of the water meters at the camp! Martha frequently hosted gatherings at her cabin at the camp, offering friends, family and neighbors fun, laughter, games and luscious desserts.

She was a deeply committed Christian and a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.

The Apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 4:7 said, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Martha ran her race with grace, kindness, and devotion to her faith and family. May she rest in peace.

Memorials may be made to Indian Springs Camp Meeting at 1518 Hwy 42 S Flovilla, GA 30216.
