Martha Sue (Susie) Gaines Hautala of Pendleton, SC went to be with Our Lord April 16, 2010 at AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson, SC.

She was born in Central SC, daughter of the late William Arthur Gaines, Sr. and Eloise Catherine Hutto Gaines. She graduated from Central High School, where she was a delegate to Girls State and then Coker College in Hartsville, SC.

She formerly lived in Aiken, SC where she was a member of St. John's UMC. She later moved to Wilmington, Delaware where she was a member of St. Paul's UMC, serving on the administrative board, the altar guild, as a Sunday school teacher and a member of various other committees. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Daughters of the American Revolution, Ceasar Rodney Chapter.

Upon returning home to her beloved birth place, Central SC, she has been a member of Mt. Zion UMC where she was president of the Eloise Gaines Circle, a circle named in her mother's honor. She served the church on the Methodist Women's Board and served on other committees.

She is survived by her children Catherine Maria Hautala McDonough of Timonium, MD, Elizabeth Gaines Hautala Bowman (Kris) of Central, SC, Martha Susan Hautala Lindsey (Jimmy) of Simpsonville, SC; grandchildren Joshua August and Alexis Susan Lindsey, and William Grayson Bowman; a sister-in-law, Veronica Gaines (Mrs. William A. Gaines, Jr.); a niece; several nephews; great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband Richard August Hautala and her brother William Arthur Gaines, Jr.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Monday and at 10 to 11 AM Tuesday at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, 108 Cross Creek Road, Central, SC 29630.

Services will be held at 11:30 AM, Tuesday Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 310 Church, Central, SC 29630 with the Rev. Kurt McPherson officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Central.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, P.O Box 186, Central, SC 29630.
