The Reverend Marvin Willie Murphree passed away Friday, August 2, 2013 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Born in Pickens County, SC on January 17, 1927 to the late Rev. Hovie Murphree and the late Jessie Winchester Murphree, Rev. Murphree attended Pickens County Schools and graduated from North Greenville Junior College and Furman University. He received his theological training at Southeastern Baptist Seminary in Wake Forest, NC.

Rev. Murphree served as pastor at Flat Rock, East Clemson and Hunt's Memorial Baptist Churches in South Carolina and Lake Toxaway, Mt. Moriah Calvert and Benvenue Baptist Churches in North Carolina. He was active in the Southern Baptist Association, serving as an officer, in each location. Rev. Murphree worked closely with mental health organizations throughout his career. He was Director of Campus Life at the Mills Home campus of the NC Baptist Children's Home in Thomasville, NC for several years and later Director of the Boys Home of the South in Greenville, SC. While in Thomasville, he was interim pastor at Park Place Baptist Church. Rev. Murphree was a member of the South Carolina Baptist General Board. During the later years of his ministry he also did clinical psychological counseling in the medical office of Dr. Robert G. Mann in Greenville, SC. Rev. Murphree was a veteran of the US Navy.

Marvin dearly loved, and was dearly loved by his family. He is survived by Marie Mann Murphree, his wife of sixty-six years; two daughters, Jean Murphree Batten (Phil) of Winston-Salem, NC, and Carol Murphree Miles (Randall) of Candor, NY; two granddaughters, Natalie Batten of Raleigh, NC and Sara Batten Warf (Martin) of Cary, NC; a great-grandson, Thomas Richmond Warf of Cary, NC; a brother, Franklin Murphree of Pickens, SC; and a sister, June Murphree Huddleston of Taylors, SC. Rev. Murphree was predeceased by brother, Aaron Murphree and sister, Virginia Murphree Jones, both of Pickens, and by his brother, Donald Murphree of Seneca, SC.

A celebration of his life is planned for Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 1:00 PM at College Park Baptist Church, 1701 Polo Road in Winston-Salem, NC and will be officiated by Senior Minister Ramon Smith.

A second memorial service will be 2:00 PM Saturday, August 10, 2013 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown.
