Mary Ashby, 77, of Easley, SC, went to heaven on June 15, 2020, her birthday, following a brief bout of cancer. Born June 15, 1943 in Cincinnati, OH, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Elsie N. Cole.
Mary attended Westminster High School and graduated from Southern Wesleyan University (then Central College) in SC. She received her MA degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati.
For her teaching career, mostly in Cincinnati, she found the greatest joy in teaching first grade. After retirement, she returned to Easley, where she had a job at Sunland Distribution Company.
Mary, a gifted pianist, had a passion for music, her favorite, the grand old hymns that bring praise to God. She enjoyed the many hours she spent reading, but the times most special to her were those with family and friends, her dearest treasure, besides Jesus. She had a knack for making friends with everyone she met. She cherished her home, where she was surrounded by a multitude of mementoes of her beloved family. She found a particular peace amid nature's beauty. She was an excellent cook, and her family will not soon forget her mac and cheese or her lemon pecan cake. All who knew her will miss the bright spirit of love, laughter, generosity, encouragement, and loyalty that was Mary Ashby.
Surviving are her brother, John H. (Lois) Cole; her sister, Verna (Leon) Mitchell; nephews, Steve Cole, Dennis (Teresa) Mitchell, and Alan, (Monica), Cole; nieces, Pam Winningham, Paula (Mark) Bruner, and Debra (Phil) Cheap; and many grand and great nephews and nieces. Steve, Pam, and Paula, in particular, have many memories of growing up living near Aunt Mary.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Samuel B. Cole.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 20, at 11:00 o'clock in the morning at Memory Gardens in Clemson, SC. Scroll down to view the service.
