Mary Ellen Hughes Gilstrap, formerly of Parkway Drive, Easley, passed away Sunday, December 24, 2017 at her residence in Myrtle Beach.

Mary Ellen was born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Gladys Eugenia Hicks Hughes and Otis Allen Hughes, Sr and graduated from Easley High School in 1942.  She worked for several decades and retired from Sangamo Electric Company and was a life-long member of Easley First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her brother William Thomas Hughes, sister-in-law Norma Jean Fowler Hughes, her granddaughter Virginia Ellen Bell Norton, grandson-in-law Barry Lee Norton, Jr, grandson Robert Edward Bell, III, granddaughter-in-law Katherine Hart Bell and great grandchildren Alexandrea Victoria Bell and Robert Edward Bell, IV.

She was predeceased by her husband Loyce Eugene Gilstrap, daughter Andrea Jean Gilstrap Bell, her son-in-law Robert Edward Bell, Jr, her parents and siblings Alvin Randolph Hughes, Charles Edward Hughes, Raymond Wilson Hughes, Sr, James Ambler Hughes, Suzanne Hughes, and Otis Allen Hughes, Jr.

Our sweet "Meme" was a shining light and was always kind and loving to all she met. She will be greatly missed, but we are excited that she celebrated Christmas with God in heaven this year.

Graveside services will be held Friday, December 29, 2017 at 1:00PM at Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum with Reverend Robert Fowler officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Easley First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 589 Easley, SC 29641.
