Piedmont, SC

Mary Wilson Neely, 91, of Piedmont, loving wife of Reverend Norman Eugene "Gene" Neely, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2026. Born on January 3, 1935, in Anderson County, to the late Bowman Wilson and the late Mae Merritt Wilson, she was a cherished matriarch and pillar of her community. Mary navigated through life with unwavering grace and a steadfast spirit, leaving a legacy marked by love, kindness, and devotion.

For over 70 years, Mary proudly embraced her role as a supportive pastor's wife, exemplifying patience and understanding that resonated within the walls of her church. Her calm demeanor and slow to anger disposition fostered an environment of warmth, encouraging all who crossed her path to feel valued and cared for. She spent her days not only in service to her family but also in service to her community, participating actively in church activities where her musical inclinations blossomed. An accomplished pianist and organist, she graced many worship services with her melodies, lending her voice to the choir and enhancing the spiritual experience for her congregation.

A gifted artisan, Mary found joy in sewing and crocheting. With nimble fingers and a creative mind, she crafted an array of beautiful items, from lovingly made clothing and blankets to delightful Christmas stockings, each piece a testament to her dedication and affection for her family. Mary was perhaps most well-known for her culinary masterpiece: her lasagna, a dish that often graced the tables of family gatherings, weaving together memories of laughter and love.

Her pride in her children and grandchildren was undeniable, as she not only adored them but also actively participated in their upbringing, imparting wisdom and nurturing their growth. Sundays were particularly sacred for Mary, reserved for church attendance, further affirming her deep-rooted faith and commitment to her family and her church.

Mary's career as a bank teller at Bank of America blossomed after she devoted years to raising her beloved children. Throughout her life, she cherished meeting new people, always greeting them with a smile and a kind word.

Along with her parents, Mary is preceded in death by son, David Neely; sister, Catherine Young; brothers, Virgil, Herbert and Richard Wilson and grandson, Brady Neely.

In addition to her devoted husband of 72 years, she is survived by daughter, Dana McElroy; son, Barry Neely (Beth); grandchildren, Hannah Neely (Daniel Gray Smith), Curry Neely, Blake Neely (Lauren), Ben McElroy (Melissa) and Taylor McElroy and great-grandchildren, Abigail Allyssa Smith, Emily Scarlette Neely, Amya Harper Smith, Karma Gray Smith, Jaxson Bo Neely and Emory McElroy.
