Mary Fulmer Sargent

Mary Fulmer Sargent, 77, wife of Seth Richard "Dick" Sargent, passed away peacefully in Greenville with her devoted husband by her side.
Mary was born in Laurens, SC, and was the daughter of the late John Gilbert Fulmer and Alice Louise Gray Fulmer. Mary grew up in Clemson with her two brothers and was a lifelong Tiger fan. She was a 1964 graduate of D.W. Daniel High School and a 1967 graduate of Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC. She married the love of her life, Dick, in 1967 and they raised their three children in Thomaston, GA and Greensboro, NC. Mary adored her family. Her favorite times were family gatherings with the Fulmer and Sargent families at Hilton Head Island every summer.
Mary generally loved people and her work with them as she used her talents as an interior designer, opening her first firm in Greensboro, NC and continuing to work with clients she loved when she and Dick moved back to Greenville in 1995. She was a talented musician and integrated her love of music, along with varied artistic talents, into her work and personal life, including professional roles as a business owner, church organist and choir director in Thomaston, GA and Trion, GA and as an elementary school teacher in Toccoa, GA. .
Wherever Mary and Dick lived, Mary became an integral part of the community. In Toccoa, GA not only was she a teacher, she was in the Junior Woman's Club and the Garden Club; in Trion, GA, she was in the Garden Club; in Thomaston, GA, she was a member of First United Methodist Church and served in many capacities of leadership. She was a member of the Green Thumb Garden Club; was former Co-President of the Thomaston City Schools P.T.O.; was a member and former Vice Regent with the John Houston Chapter, DAR; and was on the Arts Council. While living in Greensboro, NC, Mary was a member of the Symphony Guild; the Carolina Laurel Garden Club; served on the Organist Search Committee at West Market Street United Methodist Church; was a member of the Euterpe Music Club and the Celestial Cotillion Club; and while in Greenville, SC, was a member of the Alta Vista Garden Club; the SC Symphony Guild, First Wives Investment Club; Westminster Presbyterian Church where she was a former co leader along with her husband of the Couples Bible Study, served on the Interior Design Committee and was a member of the Above All Ladies Bible Study. She was presently a member of Buncombe Street Methodist Church and the Roundtable Sunday School Class as well as the Hannahs Bible study group.
Surviving in addition to her husband of 56 years are sons, Seth Richard Sargent, Jr. and his wife, Monica of Birmingham, AL, Michael John Frederick Sargent and his wife, Mary of Wilson, NC; daughter, Mary Alice Sargent of Greenville, SC; brother, John Fulmer and his wife, Barbara of Chattanooga, TN; Sister-in-law, Shirley Ann Cotney and her husband, Mark, of Thomaston, GA; Brother-in-law Fritz Sargent and his wife, Nora, of LaJolla, CA; grandchildren, Gordon Sargent and Thomas Sargent of Birmingham, AL; David Via and his wife, Haley, Eric Via and his wife, Kendra and William Via all of Wilson, NC and Andrew Sargent and Seth Sargent both of Greenville, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her twin brother, Mike Fulmer.
A Celebration of Mary's Life Service will be held at 11 AM, Friday, September 15, 2023 at Buncombe Street Methodist Church in Greenville, with Reverend Grover Putnam officiating.
The family will greet friends following the service in the church.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the Angels at Hilltop Memory Care and Pruitt Hospice/Palliative Care for their love, kindness and compassion they gave to Mary. The family is forever grateful!
