Mary Jane Spede, 83 of Clemson, SC passed peacefully at home to be with the Lord after a brief heart illness.
Mary Jane was born February 2, 1935, in Brooklyn, NY to Vincent James and Genevieve (Brady) Petrosino, both deceased. She married her childhood sweetheart Richard Joseph Spede on June 16, 1956. Mary Jane is survived by her husband Richard, children Mark Spede (Jani) of Seneca, SC and Mary Beth Rauser (William) of Shelton, CT and grandchildren Emily and Colleen Rauser, Dale and Dane Spede, as well as numerous friends and family in New York, Connecticut, South Carolina, and beyond.
Mary Jane was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Gifted with tenacity and an impeccable work ethic, she was a powerhouse executive assistant at several businesses until she found her calling working at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Hicksville, NY. Her tender heart was housed in a no-nonsense exterior. Never short on words, or shy about speaking her mind, she was known and treasured for her quick wit, colorful expressions and delightful life stories. Many benefited from her generous, compassionate spirit, as she had a rare and extraordinary dedication to supporting her friends and family members. A passionate animal lover, she frequently said, "Animals are my favorite people" and she is also survived by her dog, Lilly, and several grand critters (five dogs, a cat, a guinea pig, and a horse).
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, January 30 at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 209 Sloan St., Clemson, SC, with Father Dan McLellan officiating. A reception at the church will be followed by burial at Memory Gardens, 586 Issaqueena Trail, Clemson, SC.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Tuesday, January 29 at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, 108 Cross Creek Rd., Central, SC.
Donations in Mary Jane Spede's honor can go to St. Andrew Catholic Church in Clemson or Wild Hearts Equine Therapy, Seneca, SC.
